I am so inspired by the response to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. People from all walks of life are stepping forward on social media to raise awareness for a great cause. I know that there are some who feel that it is only a way to gain personal applause, but even if it is, isn’t it still increasing awareness and creating a supportive, positive community? I don’t know about you, but since the beginning of the Ice Bucket Challenge, my Facebook news feed has become more positive.
For me, the entire experience is a wonderful example of how leaders can create positive change within an organization or community, and inspire others to greatness. We can all be leaders. We have a direct impact on the people around us. Why not make it positive? When we give, we become an increasingly whole, or integrated person. It is hard not to have a positive attitude when you feel that you are making a difference in the world.
Winston Churchill said, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” What are you going to give to the world today? Will you participate in the Ice Bucket Challenge? Will you mentor a young professional in your organization? Engage in random acts of kindness? Will you give back? I hope you will and that we can make a positive change in the world around us. Today, and everyday, let’s take a moment to smile and connect in a positive way with the world around us.
